MET Reaction Photo No3

Yoneda Tomoko, Beyond Memory and Uncertainty‐1 (American B‐52 Returning from a Bombing Raid on Iraq. Fairford, England), Type‐C print, 2003

This is a picture of the sky with a B-52 bomber near the bottom of the picture (it is very small).  It is a contrast between the simplicity of the picture and the complication of the mission that was just accomplished.

  1. This photograph seems to be saying that like the B-52 bomber, the war in Iraq (and for that matter, most wars nowadays) is quite distant from all of us but we cannot deny that they are happening. People are being killed and war atrocities are happening but since war is unpleasant, we keep it at a distance so we don’t have to think about it.
