MET Reaction Photo No1

Yokomizo Shizuka, Stranger No. 23, Type‐C print, 2000

Story behind the photo as explained to us:  The photographer randomly selected houses and asked permission to take pictures of the owners from the window at a certain date and time.  If the owners would agree, they would only do so at the given date/time but if they disagree, they just need to keep their curtains closed.

  1. I chose this picture due to the following reasons:

The visual contact – When I look at this image I had an eerie feeling because it was as if I was looking at someone’s private life without permission. Also because the subject was looking directly at the camera he seems to see me as well. The effect of the grill cutting across his eye gives the photograph a powerful look.

Dramatic effect – Due to the various geometric shapes and the powerful framing technique of the image, using a frame within a frame, gives it a visually dramatic effect to the image.

3D effect – I like the different shades of the image –outer wall, back wall, side wall, floor and the skin tone of the subject are of different tones, and their differences give a 3D effect.

  2. When we take photographs we try to looking into other peoples private lives and it can be construed as an intrusion. When a photographer aims his or her camera towards a human subject it appears to be spontaneous curiosity to understand and document what the other person is doing. The original photograph given was quite intrusive looking straight as the person inside through the window.

This young girl was looking through a closed restaurant door to find out what is happening inside. While it is an intrusion she is not trying to hide what she is doing similar to the original photograph.
